The DTE Pursuit Awards empower Colorado-based women with cycling ambition to achieve their goals.

Meet the DTE Team

We are excited to introduce you to our 2024 Pursuit Award Riders

  • 2024 Award Rider
“ I feel at home when on my bike, attuned to my body and in a space of learning and awareness and growth. I feel and see opportunity, I experience challenges to work through mentally and physically, and I just see a space where I can really reconnect with myself.”

  • 2024 Award Rider
“The bike to me means freedom. The freedom to be mobile, to leave behind my never-ending hamster wheel of thoughts and just be. It represents strength and resilience, and the opportunity to choose myself when so much of what I do is for others. It means meditation and strength in body and mind. It means being outside, immersed in an environment, and a reminder to look around and appreciate it all instead of focusing on to-do lists and hurrying from one place to the next. ”

  • 2024 Award Rider

“The Bike Means Freedom and independence. Getting back to the mountains. Movement. Bodily autonomy. ”

  • 2024 Award Rider

“ The bike creates a way for me to explore, escape and challenge myself. It is now also a means of getting back to some sense of normality and returning to the sport I love.”

Meet The 2023 DTE Pursuit Award Riders

  • Hannah Chen - 23 - Denver, CO

I grew up in Connecticut but moved to Denver in the fall of 2021 for many of the same reasons other people do - to be closer to all things outdoors and to start new after finishing college. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Health Information Management. Now, I work as a Process Analyst at a healthcare technology company. I also work part-time at a climbing gym and am the Outdoor Coordinator for Asian Girls Ignite.

I got into biking through a series of incredible opportunities (D2E being one of them!) but was quickly convinced to stay because of the community. Outside of biking, I like to stay active through climbing, swimming, and taking the occasional group workout class. I am a sucker for snail mail, cooking meals for friends, and starting (sometimes not finishing) a new yarn project.

  • Anna Hulse - Age 23 - Boulder, CO

Last spring, I moved to Boulder, Colorado after graduating from college. I grew up as a downhill skier but switched my focus to cycling in 2019 after some serious injuries. Biking quickly became my sport and feels most natural for my body and mindset. I’m completely hooked.

I recently left my job at an environmental policy focused non-profit to apply for law school with the hopes of addressing inequities in water access and rights in the Colorado River Basin. While navigating the grueling law school application process, I've taken time to assess my relationship with cycling and spent long days out on the bike relaxing and building an endurance base.

I’m soft spoken and witty. I maintain a side hustle as a graphic designer, illustrator, and writer in the attempt to keep my creative brain happy. I love philosophy and I often find myself pondering political theories on long bike rides. I am driven by a curiosity to learn about sports psychology, nutrition, racing, and recovery while working to overcome giant challenges and explore my strength.

  • Kate Herrick Madden - 45 - Salida, CO

I was born and raised in Denver, graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Natural Resource Management, joined the Peace Corps, and served in Lesotho, in Southern Africa, after college.

I'm a divorced mother of two. My older son is ten and is autistic, and my younger son is seven. I'm a middle school science teacher and gifted and talented coordinator.

I've always been one to be independent and choose my own adventures, but somehow I lost sight of that over many years. Last year changed that. I was granted the opportunity to participate in SBT GRVL as a member of the All Bodies on Bikes gravel team. Additionally, I was selected to ride with Distance to Empty in their inaugural season.  New to gravel cycling and racing, I used the support of DTE and the races we participated in to build my comfort, skills, and endurance over the course of the summer, successfully completing seven events, including SBT GRVL.

I am now on the leadership team of All Bodies on Bikes as we work to expand the messaging that there is a place for everyone on bikes, and I am honored to continue racing with a second season supported by Distance to Empty. I look forward to continuing to advocate for including and representation in the gravel cycling community and encourage folks to do hard things.

  • Teresa Metzger - 49 - Fort Collins, CO

I'm originally from Ohio and but also lived in NC, NY, and VA/MA/DC for work. I settled in Fort Collins 15 years ago to work at CSU.  I am a student affairs administrator working in Housing & Dining Services, supporting students with housing and food insecurity needs.  I also develop community partnerships on behalf of my department to support student success. I love working with students and social justice advocacy.

The past two years have been challenging. I have had some big health issues that led me to two major surgeries in 2021/2022. In January 2022, I had a bilateral oophorectomy and radical hysterectomy for cancer detection and prevention due to my family history. As a result, I was thrown immediately into surgical menopause.  I was so grateful that there was no cancer and that my risk for future cancer was significantly decreased. I was so happy to be healthy while feeling so many emotions. Surgical menopause is no joke on top of recovering from two surgeries in one year. I didn't want to lose my love of cycling and adventure through this new phase of my life. I got connected with a great Physical Therapist and rejoined my morning workout crew to get my fitness back and rebuild strength. I also started hormone therapy to manage my menopausal symptoms. I hope to educate women about the risk factors for ovarian and breast cancer while inspiring those struggling through menopause to continue to enjoy cycling and outdoor adventuring as we thrive into our beautiful future selves.

  • Heather Rubin - 33- Denver, CO

I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. My parents always encouraged me to shoot for the stars. I was a dreamer. And I always dreamed of a life I chose rather than the life I had to live. I knew I had to get out and build a life for myself. I went to school in NC for Chemistry and played and coached lacrosse. I worked three part-time jobs just about all of college. I went back for my masters and managed to get accepted into CSU’s Ph.D. program in Chemistry. It was in CO in 2013 that my true cycling journey slowly began. I sold my car to have the money to move to CO and used what was left to buy two bikes to get around. CO is where I belong, and it is where I found my people. I have volunteered for over six years with Partners Mentoring Youth to give back, and I love the outdoor, active lifestyle. I am the kind of person that can’t do something a little bit. I go all in.

  • Ryen Santana - 25 - Fort Collins, CO

I was born and raised in sunny San Diego, CA. I’m a first-time mom to a beautiful and tiny little boy, he was born on 9/17 of this year, so I’m getting into the swing of things with being a (very) new mom! It’s a ton of fun; being a parent has been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever experienced, but I’d never change it for the world. Family is a significant component of my life. Even though it’s just my husband and me in Colorado, we still have a solid support system here so mama can ride bikes all the time! Which has significantly helped to gain a sense of normalcy after having a baby.

I've had many obstacles where I could have quit. I developed Temporal Lobe Epilepsy out of the blue in June of 2019. I had 5-10 grand mal seizures daily, and it wasn’t until I had a severe seizure in March of 2020 where my brain couldn’t handle it anymore, and I had a stroke. I lost most of my motor functions from brain damage; the doctors thought I’d never be able to enjoy my hobbies again. After finding a medication that worked, I have been episode free for 2.5 years. With sheer determination and rehabilitation through riding, climbing, and mobility exercises, I have regained everything I lost; if anything, I've just gotten stronger.

  • Lailah Tarakai - 25 - Golden, CO

I was born in Columbia, MO, and raised by two Afghanistan war refugees. I experienced quite a bit of trauma growing up and have now dedicated my life to providing trauma-focused therapy to those in need. I am currently a social worker for individuals with disabilities, a group therapist at a rehab center, and am pursuing higher education to fulfill my dream of having my own practice one day! I LOVE ICE CREAM and will gladly share some with anyone who wants a little more joy in their life! I love with every fiber of my being and will always offer my services to anyone that may need them :) I try to keep a positive attitude and spread as much love and joy as possible!
